Don Bradman

Bradman Baggy Green

On 29 April 1996, the Australian Post Office made a change to the Stamp Issue Policy which allowed for living persons to be featured on stamps.  Prior to the change, the only living persons allowed on the stamps of Australia were members of the British Royal Family.

Australia Post made history on 23 January 1997 by featuring the first living Australian on a postage stamp.  The whole of Australia agreed with the choice of Donald George Bradman, cricketer and patriot who was 88 when the stamps were issued. The label of champion and hero are used too often nowadays. True champions take risks and do mighty deeds for their people and nation and not for personal gain. Such was Our Don Bradman.  He belongs to the Anzac tradition and forged an Australian identity in the years of the Great Depression with the flashing blade of his cricket bat.

He was unique. While the champions in the game of cricket average 55 to this day, Don Bradman retired in 1948 with an average of 99.94. Sir Donald Bradman was born on 27 August 1908 and died on 25 February 2001. RIP, Sir.
